Just seen this,
http://www.crn.com/news/cloud/300081139/oracle-confirms-12-2-database-release-will-be-cloud-only-at-first-analyst-predicts-move-will- frustrate-customers.htm?cid=nl_alert#
How bloody annoying. Will anyone buy cloud services just to get release 12.2? I don't think so. But then, I've never understood marketing. If I did, I'ld be a salesman, and rich. Instead of a technician, and broke.

Interesting indeed. Since in my organisation we usually (since the 8.X days) did an upgrade from (X-1).2 to X.2 around the time when (X+1).1 came out, when all the third-party software vendors we use have in-house also support it, not really a big thing for us NOW.

But who knows when they try to push a "cloud only forever" direction.

It could happen. Larry has been quite, shall we say, "decisive" before when it comes to licence changes. Think of all those people who have SE1 licences. In a week or two SE1 goes straight from Premium Support into Sustaining Support. So you stay on 12.1.0.1 SE1 forever with no more PSUs, or you buy 12.1.0.2 SE2 licences.
As someone who is totally committed to the Oracle product set technically, financially, and perhaps even emotionally, I find these announcements very worrying. Trust Uncle Oracle. He will look after us. I hope.
