When I load the CD I get the autorun screen, then I click install/deinstall products and nothing happens. I get an hour glass briefly, the oracle autorun screen disappears, and the machine just looks at me! I've tried stopping and starting services, etc..

Anybody know what is wrong? It is a new Dell PC.

I am having the exact same problem trying to intall the Oracle 8.1.7 client on a new Dell 8100. I also had the problem with a Gateway machine. Both had Windows 2000 operating system.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't know of a patch.

Is it a Pent. IV?

If it is, follow the following steps:

1) Copy the whole installation CD to the HD.

2) Find and rename the Symantec-built Java compiler(?) "symcjit.dll" to something else, like "symcjit.old".

3) Run the installer

I have only done this for the client install BTW. Good luck. Let me know what happens.

problem :
Today I got one problem or bug whatever it can be said while I was trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 for windowsNT/2000/XP in a Dell P IV computer which runs windows 2000/XP os : it's not giving any response : it just displays the hour glass pointer for half a second and then stops anything. Not any Java task is been launched.

answer :
Hey I got the Solution. Please, copy Ur CD in Ur C drive then rename the symjit.dll file to symjit.dll.old then start installation from Ur temp directory. So simple ... but it really works.

That was a really good suggestion John. Even I have been struggling with the same problem and your suggestion worked.

There was a typo on the file name
symjit.dll should have been
symcjit.dll

Other than this the solution is splendid.

Thanks a lot guys. I Did find this solution by my side also. I do confirm it works well. Anyway, I'd like to know why this dll does so.
Last thing : the problem seems to appear also on some compaq Pcs based on PIV ... does it mean that the PIV is involved in this problem ?

Hello,

I ran into this problem yesterday. When i tried to install ora 9 rel 1 server software on my new dell inspiron laptop 3,03 Ghz 80 g hd. I made 3 partitions, first with xp home, second with xp pro and de rest is for a Linux red hat installation.

When i boot with xp pro and put in the oracle cd, the startup screen appear. Then when i select install, oracle install screen disapear.

Then message is: cannot install java runtime enviroment to <and than the home dir> go to javasoft.com to install jre 1.1.7 and try again.

This i tried, but i get the same message. I tried to copied the install cd, and change de .dll's and still i does not work.

Please help!

Todays you'll find Oracle 10 client from

http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/ole_db/htdocs/utilsoft.htm

You can edit the ORAPARAM.ini file in Disk1\install directory

Either define your own jre path or leave it blank and the installer will ask for it at runtime.
