Dear Sir,
I really need a help from everybody who good in Oracle !
When the time I login by entering the username and password, I received a error message as stated ORA-01034:ORACLE not available.

error 1053 The service could not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

My OS is Window XP home, and my oracle version is Personal Edition 8.1.6 !

Please give a help, please !

Have you started the Oracle service?

Do you see any errors in the database's ALERT.LOG file?

Is it a new installation, or did it work properly until now?

Could the source of your problems be the fact that Oracle 8 isn't certified with Windows XP (and, besides that, I don't remember I saw that Oracle works properly on XP Home, only Professional edition).

step process of what i did
1. format the system--successfully done
2 install win xp sp2--successfully done
3. install oracle 8i- successfully done.
4. able to use oracle . able to login. no problem what so ever.
5. restart the system.
6. unable to login to ORACLE.
7. ERROR MESSAGE ORA-01034:ORACLE NOT AVAILABLE

Did you try to start the Oracle database up manually? From the command prompt, follow these commands and see whether you'll get something like this:

C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\BIN>sqlplus /nolog

SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Pet Tra 28 09:42:15 2006

Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle.  All rights reserved.

SQL> connect sys/pwd as sysdba
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area  167772160 bytes
Fixed Size                  1247900 bytes
Variable Size              75498852 bytes
Database Buffers           88080384 bytes
Redo Buffers                2945024 bytes
Database mounted.
Database opened.
SQL>
