>> On Solaris we have a 2G file size limit
This 2gb file limit is for all 32 bit OS.
You must be using 64 bit these days (most probably).
>>is it bad to have a 10G datafile?
Nope. Oracle bigtablespace will support even terabyte datafiles.
>> just curious to know if there are some best practices for the datafile size.
Depends on your environment and your backup architecture.
If you are using too small datafiles, just make sure you are not running out of limits set by MAXDATFILES and DB_FILES.

Oops.. my bad. I am not sure what I did. I saw an edit button, thought of adding few more comments. But it looks like it erased my original question. Sorry about that :->
You should see it now

Let me re-phrase my question then:
1. What are the pros-cons of having small datafiles vs one large datafile?
(Since I am using ASM, I/0 contention and locks will be handled by ASM. So I cannot say these as a reason to use smaller datafiles.)
2. Is there any specific "limit" for the datafile size when using EMC storage? (does it matter? or do we just have the limits imposed by OS and oracle for the datafile size)?

I understand. When we talk about big tablespace, then I can use a much bigger datafile.

Thanks Smile

By saying Bigtablespace what i actually meant is Oracle feature called Bigfile tablespace, which
designed to have several terabytes.

http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/ImprovedVLDBSupport10g.php

Bigfile feature is quite useful with VLDB kind of usage.

>>What are the pros-cons of having small datafiles vs one large datafile?
As i said before, it depends on your environment.
One generic case is backup/recovery.
Having one big file to bakup, may be a problem and you ***may*** loose the file altogether and have
bigger downtime.
multiple small files are easy to backup and restore. But you do not want thousands of 1Gig files Smile
>>Is there any specific "limit" for the datafile size when using EMC storage
Nothing that i am aware of.
Size does not matter much (unless we are talking about many many small files or one Very big file).
Just make sure that you are spreading the files across the disks.

Thanks Mahender.

I have actually read about bigfile TS (just one LARGE datafile). But never used it before. Thanks for the references. really helped.

Thanks again. Your point about backup made sense too.
